The Twingo Cup qualifying session at the Salzburgring for the second round of the championship was incredibly close. Czech driver Martin Toth narrowly beat his countryman Matyáš Kučera by just 0.010 seconds in the battle for the best starting position for Sunday’s opening race.
Third-placed Giacomo Pegazzano was 0.214 seconds slower than the pole time, while fourth-placed Martin Varga trailed Toth by half a second. The third row of the grid will be occupied by Lukáš Bílek and David Toth.
Gilbert Denzer qualified seventh, ahead of Oliver Šteiner in eighth. Noah Bognanni recorded the ninth-fastest time, while Thomas Schmidt rounded out the top ten in the 18-car field.
The qualifying session was extremely competitive, with the nature of the Austrian circuit favouring slipstreaming due to its long straights and relatively few corners. Making use of a tow was crucial for setting a competitive lap time. Not every driver was fortunate enough to have a drafting partner, however, with such small gaps separating the drivers and slipstreaming expected to play a major role once again, Sunday’s race promises to be one of the most unpredictable of the weekend.
