Reflecting on Slovakia Ring Ring: Clio Cup delivers again

Tomaš Pekař’s double win at Slovakia Ring doesn’t quite reflect the spectacular racing witnessed in the second round of the Clio Cup. While the Czech driver seems to be on his way to another championship title, he’s still facing strong competition.

Last weekend, Slovakia Ring hosted the second event of the 2025 Clio Cup championship. It came almost two months after the season opener at Red Bull Ring, which featured some of the most action-packed racing in recent years, with multi-car battles for victory in both races.

At Slovakia Ring, the story unfolded a bit differently. Pekař from Carpek Racing and Bartolomiej Mirecki from BM Racing were locked in a close fight in Race 1. But Pekař appeared to have the upper hand in overall pace, leading for almost the entire race. He briefly lost the lead for less than a lap but managed to overtake Mirecki again and maintained just enough of a gap to stay out of reach.

That was the story at the front of Race 1. But behind them, there was plenty more to watch — particularly the battle for the final podium spot between Janík Motorsport teammates Julian Smiechowski and Oskar Marszalkowski. Further down the field, the competition for points was just as intense.

Thanks to the reversed grid in Race 2, expectations were high for another thrilling contest, and it delivered, at least until Turn 2. Mirecki, Marszalkowski, and Filip Dziwok went three-wide through the first corner and attempted the same through the fast right-hander that followed. This time, however, it didn’t end well and all three crashed out.

That opened the door for Pekař, who suddenly found himself without his main rivals. Or so it seemed at the beginning, but Smiechowski kept up the pressure and, in the closing laps, launched an attempt to pass the Czech driver. A slight contact occurred between them, but both held position to the chequered flag, with a comfortable margin over third-placed Alexander Spetz, who celebrated his first Clio Cup podium.

Once again, the Clio Cup delivered exciting, unpredictable racing, a reminder that final results often fail to capture the full drama of two thrilling 25-minute sprints.
